The Nursing Human Resources Challenge of the 21st Century
ACEN’s Position
ACEN believes that the current health care
system cannot be sustained unless immediate
action is taken to address the growing shortage
of nurses in Canada and across the world. For
this reason ACEN strongly recommends that
jurisdictions across Canada:
1. Review recommendations described in the
Pan Canadian Human Resources Study
that focus on mitigation of the impact of
the growing nursing shortage,
2. Immediately develop and implement
strategies that will increase the supply and
retention of nurses, and
3. Maximize the use of technology to support
care delivery.
Nursing Research, Knowledge Generation, Transfer and Dissemination
ACEN’s Position
ACEN believes that in order to advance safe,
appropriate and cost-effective nursing care, nursing
practice must be founded on a sound knowledge
base that is developed through research and levels of
evidence. Sustaining best practices in nursing and
health care now and into the future depends on the
generation, testing, dissemination and uptake of new
knowledge, and on systems designed to support
nurses to use new evidence as it emerges and to be
innovative in their practice.
Safe, Reliable Health Care in Canada
ACEN’s Position
ACEN believes that access to safe, reliable, quality care is
a fundamental right of all Canadians.
The involvement and leadership of nurses are essential
elements in creating a safe and reliable health care
system. The system depends upon nurses who are
involved in direct clinical care to be the “eyes and ears” –
the assessors and monitors of patients, the coordinators of
the care team and the interceptors of errors before they
occur. The system depends upon the system knowledge
and experience of nursing leaders to identify issues,
advocate for, initiate strategies and provide ongoing
support for safe clinical environments.
The Academy's objectives are to:
