QWQHC’s 4th Annual Summit: Healthy Workplaces in Action: Working Together to Deliver Quality Care

This summit will be held at the Crown Plaze Hotel, Ottawa, Ontario.

Workshop # 1:
Effective Teamwork and Communication: Strategies to Support Patient Safety

This three-hour, interactive workshop will introduce participants to the tenets of teamwork and communication as a cogent strategy to support patient safety and organizational culture.

Workshop # 2:
Bridging Evidence-Based and Action Learning Approaches to Foster Cultural Transformation in Managerial Practices

CRISO’s team is engaged in Quebec's CHSRF/REISS (2008) program at L’Hôpital du Sacré-Coeur de Montréal. Stabilizing nursing teams and improving the quality of care are the goals. The team will discuss with participants actual successes and obstacles when (1) implementing a culture of measures that link work climate perceptions, organizational efficacy and quality of care; (2) developing integrity leadership, reflexive practices and bi-directional control approach to communication through co-development program and (3) guiding senior managers in an action-research process aiming to shed light on how they (management staff) reproduce in their daily practices the cultural modes that would explain some redundancies of operational systems failures.

Workshop # 3:
Together We’re Better: The Rich and Rocky Road to Interprofessional Practice

This three-hour workshop will be co-facilitated by a nurse and physician team who have worked together in successful interprofessional team development with a focus on both team and clinical outcomes. Participants will have an opportunity to enjoy a mini-input session covering the TIPS project, an interprofessional team development initiative funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care.

Executive Training for Research Application (EXTRA)

2010 EXTRA program now accepting applications from Nurse Managers

Are you looking to enhance your skills in using evidence-based research at work? Have you researched professional development programs, but are not clear on which program is the right for you?

The Executive Training for Research Application (EXTRA) fellowship program might be the right program for you. The program is now accepting applications from senior nurse executives looking to be one of 24 fellows to participate in the 2010 program.

To date, 285 senior healthcare leaders, more than a third of which have been nurse executives, have completed the program. EXTRA is managed by Canadian Health Services Research Foundation with the help of four inter-professional associations, including the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA).

“EXTRA provides senior nursing leaders with the training and tools needed to help improve their ability to acquire evidence and use the information in their daily decision making,” says Lisa Little, Director of Public Policy at CNA. “The program aligns with our strategy to help provide solutions, grounded in research, to improve Canada’s publicly funded not-for-profit health system.”

The two-year EXTRA program is spread over four away-from-home residency sessions made up of six modules, including an intervention project that provides an opportunity to apply practical problem-solving to a current work situation.

Tracy Wasylak, Vice President, South Health Campus, Alberta Health Services participated in the 2007 program. She entered the program with the goal of enhancing her ability to acquire evidence that would inform her decisions and to help focus her inquiry around solving complex issues within clinical operations.

“Because I was able to complete a program project based on an actual, real-life workplace situation, I found that I was better able to take my learnings and apply them immediately,” Wasylak said. “I also appreciated the extensive networking opportunities, the manageable work/program balance, and the introduction to desktop tools that have increased my ability to acquire information in a timely manner.”

To learn more about EXTRA, read past fellow profiles, and learn how to apply visit www.cna-aiic.ca .

The application deadline is March 2, 2010.

Due March 20, 2010

STRENGTHENING HEALTHCARE GOVERNANCE

The Canadian Health Services Research Foundation (CHSRF) and the Canadian Patient Safety Institute (CPSI) are working in partnership to
design a new program to advance quality and excellence in Canadian healthcare. The Effective Governance for Quality and Patient Safety education program builds on the expertise CHRSF has gained through its successful EXTRA. This new governance program is for organizational teams from healthcare organizations – including board members, CEOs and healthcare executives – and focuses on improving quality, performance, and patient safety through the use of evidence. Introducing the “Quality of Worklife Innovative Practices” Inventory

Quality Worklife Quality Healthcare

As Canadians, we value our healthcare system. We want to know that we can count on high quality care when we need it. Reducing wait times, increasing access to care, and improved patient safety require healthcare organizations to become healthier workplaces for our healthcare providers. Evidence shows there is a direct link between healthy healthcare workplaces and quality patient outcomes. Evidence also tells us that our healthcare providers are struggling; many are leaving their jobs, and recruiting health professionals continues to be a challenge across the country. The need for collaboration and innovation to improve the health of our workplaces has never been greater…

In response, the QWQHC--a coalition of twelve National Partners working together to drive improvements in quality of worklife and quality healthcare--is pleased to introduce the “Quality of Worklife Innovative Practices” inventory. This tool—an easy-to-use online database—is designed to connect Worklife Champions across the country and facilitate the exchange and spread of worklife initiatives across the Canadian healthcare system.

The QWQHC hopes that this will be a widely used resource, and a feasible way to support working together to make health workplaces healthier. To get us started, a few organizations have already made a submission. Read Colchester East Hants Health Authority’s “Physician Engagement Strategy”, Saskatoon Health Region’s “Our Values in Action”, and Seven Oaks General Hospital’s “Respectfully Yours” now in our inventory. And, do submit your practice today!

Feel free to forward this call for submissions to the most appropriate person in your organization, as well as to distribute to your network.
